Yamaha YPT-220 keyboard

The Yamaha YPT-220 is a quality electronic keyboard that will fit any beginner or intermediate player. It features 61 organ style keys and ability to play up to 32 notes at once, which is sufficient in most cases, even for complex songs. Yamaha is well-known for its sound quality, and this portable keyboard is not an exception. Its sophisticated AWM tone generation system provides rich textures of the original sounds.

Yamaha YPT-220 is loaded with extensive range of voices and rhythm patterns. You’ll find various realistic tones and sound effects, from standard grand and electric piano, organ, strings, to interesting effects such as dog barking and running water. Reverb effects simulate ambience of a room, concert hall, or even stage for solo instruments.

Yamaha Education Suite (Y.E.S.) provides impressive built-in tools for learning. There are 3 practice methods: Listen & Learn (listen selected part of the song and learn melody, chords or rhythm), Timing (play the notes at the correct timing), and Waiting (play the correct notes). While you’re playing, your performance will be graded. You can choose to practice with left hand, right hand, or both hands. If you want to learn how to play chords, chord dictionary is very helpful. It displays individual notes of selected chords.

The Pros:

  • Inexpensive, but high-quality musical instrument.
  • A lot of features to play with, something for both kids and adults.
  • With standard MIDI In and MIDI Out ports built into Yamaha YPT-220 you can connect the keyboard to other MIDI instruments and devices, or computer for expanded musical functionality and production potential.
  • Excellent learning functions – Yamaha Education Suite (Y.E.S.), built-in metronome that keeps an accurate tempo, chord dictionary, will make learning and practicing music both easy and fun.
  • Premium package comes bundled with professional closed-cup headphones, single braced x-style keyboard stand, and AC power adapter.
  • One Touch Setting feature can automatically choose the best voice for you, based on song and style you selected. This is perfect if you are unsure about the suitable voice for the song or just want to quickly set up tone and enjoy playing.

The Cons:

  • Apparently stand which comes with some packages doesn’t fit the keyboard perfectly, because it’s universal stand, not made for this particular keyboard. It doesn’t fit into the groves under the keyboard, but most importantly, it doesn’t slip off. It just needs some adjustment.
  • When you read descriptions of the product you can come to the wrong conclusion, but this is not touch-sensitive keyboard.

Here you can hear how Yamaha YPT-220 actually sounds.

Let’s see what some of the owners said about Yamaha YPT-220.

I wanted cheap keyboard because, as a beginner, I didn’t want to give a lot of money for something I wasn’t sure I’m going to use for a long time. This keyboard was an ideal choice. It has some awesome learning options and I’m especially thankful for headsets that came with package, so my neighbors wont be upset when I play the keyboard by night… (ss)

I am not an expert, but I think that the keyboard has a very natural sound. There’s a lot of features for beginner like me. I found recording music to and from the computer through MIDI connection especially helpful learning tool. There’s also plenty of voices. I use them as special effects for my homemade videos… (Emaginit)

In comparison to Casio CTK-2100, this electronic keyboard has similar features and price. They are both well established brands on the market, known to create high quality products, so it’s really mostly the question what you prefer more. Main difference is that Yamaha YPT-220 uses standard MIDI ports while Casio model transmits MIDI over USB.

If you are looking for entry-level musical keyboard this is excellent choice. It’s great bang for the buck.

Oh, too bad, I thought that YPT-220 has touch response. What is the cheapest touch sensitive electronic keyboard then?

I started practicing acoustic guitar two years ago, but I couldn’t stay focused on it. So, I wished to try an additional music instrument. Both violin and piano were too expensive for my budget. I picked this Yamaha YPT-220 and I’m so happy that I did. It brings so much wonderful time in my life.
